Multi-use lecture theatre offering a stimulating and collaborative learning environment

14 August 2023, London, United Kingdom Audiologic, the acclaimed provider of professional audio solutions, in collaboration with leading integrator GVAV, has announced the implementation of a versatile hybrid workspace at the University of Hertfordshire. This innovative project incorporates Q-SYS audio, video, and control technology to create a seamless learning experience for students, whether they are physically present or participating in remote learning off campus.

Transforming a Lecture Theatre into a Dynamic, Multi-Use Learning Space

Recognising the need to adapt to evolving user demands, both corporate and higher education institutions are transforming their workspaces to embrace greater flexibility. The University of Hertfordshire identified the outdated Prince Edward Hall lecture theatre as a space that had the potential to be transformed into a much more optimal learning environment catering for the needs of both in person and remote students. In response, they  developed a new multi-use learning space, within a dynamic setting, designed to provide a new CDIO (Conceive Design Implement Operate) style of learning for individuals and groups for all University students.

The lecture theatre underwent a complete renovation, resulting in a new flat-floor space that prioritises audio-visual performance. This includes the incorporation of acoustic treatment on the walls and ceilings, to reduce the room’s RT60, as well as adding modern geometric LED lighting to rejuvenate the space.

Seamless Integration of Cutting Edge Technology

The University of Hertfordshire partnered with GVAV, a leading integrator in the higher education sector, for the audio visual requirements of the project.

Sukh Basi, Sales Director for London and the South East at GVAV, comments: “We worked with Audiologic for the equipment supply and technical support on this project and Q-SYS quickly stood out as the clear choice to deliver on the clients brief due to the scalability and flexibility of the ecosystem.”

The project specification incorporated a full Q-SYS audio, video and control system, complimenting the impressive 4.8m NEC LED video wall and interactive displays. The video system consisted of 12 x Q-SYS NV-32-H software-configurable video endpoints and 2 x NC-20×60 PTZ cameras, with system control provided via custom UCIs on the 2 x TSC-70-G3 touchscreens. Due to the open format of the ceiling, the Q-SYS AD-P4T pendants were deployed to provide an even coverage throughout the space. For the assistive listening system, Sennheiser’s Mobile Connect was used to provide maximum flexibility for the students.

The NV-32-H (Core Capable) multipurpose, software-configurable video endpoints offer two distinct operating modes, based on the needs of the application. ‘Core Mode’ transforms the device into a fully integrated Q-SYS processor with local HDMI switching capabilities. ‘Peripheral Mode’ allows multi-stream video encoding or decoding for network-based HDMI video distribution. Like all Q-SYS devices, the NV-32-H (Core Capable) offers native integration and control driven by the Q-SYS OS, simplifying setup and configuration while eliminating the need for advanced programming knowledge.

Sukh Basi adds “Another all-Q-SYS end-to-end AVoIP deployment for the University brings comprehensive control to Prince Edward Hall, enhancing collaboration and engagement within the learning environment offering a practical solution for hybrid and remote learning requirements.”

The user control interface on the TSC has been designed with ease of use in mind, enabling simple control over what is a fairly comprehensive system, allowing seamless presentation and content switching.

The end result is an inviting and stimulating environment that promotes collaborative learning in a contemporary manner. With fully controllable, high-quality audio, students can engage onsite or participate remotely with equal accessibility.
